This is the most popular and common boy's name in the world: the second is Spanish

Did you know that the most popular male name in the world is Spanish? We are not saying it: a database that includes more than 30 million names says it.

This is the most popular and common boy's name in the world

Determining exactly the total number of names that exist in the world is a practically impossible task. Especially since, only in Spain, the Civil Registry allows some invented baby names to be registered.

It is an impossible task for us, although not for websites specialized in this issue, such as Forebears, an expert in analyzing the popularity of different names and surnames. In her database she brings together more than 30 million names that prevail in all (or almost all) countries in the world and, thanks to her, she has prepared a document with the ranking of the most popular and common ones throughout the globe.

Names are the ones that most people carry but also the ones that people know the most when we ask them about them. Do you want a surprising fact? Many of them are Spanish (and, in fact, they are on the list of the most common names in our country, according to the National Institute of Statistics).

Although, of all of them, we are left with the first boy's name that appears on the list. And, although the first is not, the second is Spanish and no, it does not appear in its translation into another language, but the original: the one we all know in Spain.

The most common boy's name in the world

The most popular boy's name in the world, according to this website, is Mohammed, carried by more than 45 million people. A name of Arabic origin that translates into Spanish as Muhammad.

Although we cannot skip Mohammed, the truth is that if we continue looking at the list, in fourth place we find Jose (yes, in its Spanish translation) as another of the most famous and well-known names around the globe.

Let us remember that Jose is a name that derives from Aramaic and that in Hebrew is Yosef, with great biblical presence since he was the father of Jesus of Nazareth. We could say that its meaning is 'increase' and that it is also one of the most common names in Spain (although not the most popular).

We can also find variations like Pepe (the most famous) or translations: Joseph, Jozef, or Josef.

Other boy names that appear on the list of the most famous in the world

Jose takes the cake, but he is not the only name known in our country that appears on the list:

  • David appears in position number 13
  • Juan occupies the 19th place
  • Daniel is ranked number 24
  • Luis on the 25th
  • Antonio (the most common and repeated name in Spain) appears in position number 28
  • Francisco in 32
  • Pedro is number 50
  • Manuel in position number 62

Looking at the Forebears list we can conclude one thing: the names that are most repeated around the world are also the same ones that are repeated in Spain (if we take into account the INE graphs ).

However, there is something curious to highlight: Antonio, which is the most repeated name in our country, is not, by any means, the most popular name internationally speaking. Before him, Jose, Juan, or David take the cake.
